Hello ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to The Laughing Penguin website.
If you like top class stand up comedy in the north east, then you've come to the right place!
Since we started The Laughing Penguin in February 2008, we've had some of the best acts on the UK comedy circuit gracing our humble stage, such as Sarah Millican, Chris Ramsey, Gary Delaney, Jason Cook, Jim Smallman, Nathan Caton, and Joe Lycett, to name but a few.
If you've never been to one of our shows before, then here's what to expect.
Our mission is simple:
- Provide you (the audience) with the most laughs you can get for a price that isn't going to burn a hole in your wallet.
- Provide you with a comfortable environment in which to enjoy the show, and a wide selection of reasonably priced beverages.
The Laughing Penguin runs two types of shows each month, both at The Bridge Hotel, Newcastle.
On the first Wednesday of the month, we have our pro gig, with some of the finest acts on the UK comedy circuit. Each of these shows has an opening act, two newer acts in the middle, and a superb headliner. Plus we've got our resident MC, Tony Jameson keeping things together.
But thats not all, we also have a new act night on the third Wednesday of the month. This is where brand new acts take to the stage for the first time, along with professional acts coming down and trying out new material infront of a warm appreciative audience.
We have also booked comedy shows for the likes of Edinburgh Fringe Festival, SPLIT Festival, Costa Foundation, Newcastle University, and OXJAM International Festival. The Laughing Penguin New Act of the Year
Last year we ran a new act competition for the first time, which was won by a fantastic new act from Glasgow, Richard Gadd.
Richard beat off no fewer than 13 other competitors to claim our 1st prize, which was cash, and future paid bookings from The Laughing Penguin.
Not only did Richard win our award, but this year, he was also a finalist in the prestigious Chortle Student Comedian of the Year competition.
Expect to see more of him this year as his stock continues to rise!
We'll also be running another new act competition, so keep your eyes peeled for details of how to enter.
